KHAMAAJ

Khamaaj is a Hindusthani classical Raga, belonging to the Khamaaj thaat this is a raga which finds more usage in the semi classical or light music types like gazhals and thumri. Khamaaj is a late evening raga. The Carnatic classical equivalent of Khamaaj is said to be Harikambhoji. Raga Khamaaj is a Shadav-Sampoorna raaga. It is a raga which can express the mood of Shringara and Viraha. This may be the reason for many Thumris being composed based on raga Khamaaj. Kannada film industry has given many melodies based on Khamaaj which are remembered to this day.

Some of the melodies of kannada films set to Khamaaj are listed below

1. The kawwali type "KaNNa Notadalle" from the movie 'Sipayi Ramu'.

2. The perfect fit for Khamaaj, "Cheluveya Nota Chenna" from the movie 'Shankar Guru'.

3. The humour filled "Satyabhaame Satyabhaame" from the movie 'Ravichandra'.

  1. I want to know which is the raga of Kannada film song 'kathe heLuve nanna kathe heLuve' of film naagara havu. Some people say it is ASA rag (sa ri ma pa dha sa... Sa ni dha pa ma ga risa... Audava sampoorna vakra raaga). But I doubt it. Will you please clarify. BS Chandrasekhar
