PILU

          Pilu is a hindusthani Classical style raga, belonging to the Kaafi thaat, or known to contain the kaafi facet, Pilu predominantly expresses calm and peace. Raga Pilu has the same counter part as pilu in the Carnatic classical style. Raga Pilu is an Audava-Sampoorna raga, being an evening melody, it is often seen incorporated into light classical styles like bhajans, thumris etc. Kannada film songs have some of the best compositions set to raga Pilu

DHAANI

          Dhaani is a hindusthani classical style raga,  belonging to the Kaafi thaat, it is an Audava Raga. Dhaani is an evening melody.Raga Shudhdha Dhanyasi of the carnatic classical style is the equivalent of raga Dhaani. Shudhdha Dhanyasi is derived from the parent raga Kharaharapriya and also called Udayaravi Chandrika.

          Kannada film music has some of the all time hit songs composed in this raga

Few well known songs set in Dhaani are listed below

1. The never fading ever melodious "Baare Baare Chandada Cheluvina Taare" from the movie 'Naagara Haavu'

2. The melodious "HeLe Kogile" from the movie 'Nammoora Mandaara Hoove'

3. The beautiful melody "Nanna Neenu Gellalaare" from the movie 'Nee Nanna gellalaare'

KALAAVATHI

          Kalaavathi is a hindusthani classical style raga,  belonging to the khamaj thaat, it is an Audava Raga. Kalaavathi is a late night melody. Raga Valachi of the carnatic classical style is the equivalent of raga Kalaavathi. Valachi is derived from the parent raga Harikambhoji.
          Kannada film music has some of the evergreen songs composed in this raga

Few well known songs set in Kalaavathi are listed below

1. The very melodious " Yaava Kaanike Needali Ninage" from the movie 'MasaNada Hoovu' 

2. One more melody track "KaaLi Daasa KaaNadantha" from the movie 'Maryaade Mahalu'

3. A song inclined towards philosophy " Manave Mandira" from the movie 'Thoogu Deepa' 

BHIMPALAS:

         Bhimpalas is a raga of the hindusthani classical style. Belonging to the Kaafi Thaat,  it is considered to be an evening melody. Raga Abheri of the carnatic classical style is a close comparison to Bhimpalas. 

          Bhimpalas was supposed to be the favourite raga of well known music director M. Ranga Rao.

Few well known songs set in Bhimpalas are listed below

1. The ever green, " Banna Nanna Olavina Banna" from the movie 'Bandhana'.

2. "Cheluveye Ninna Nodalu" from the movie ' Hosa Belaku'. The characters Ravi and Vatsala from this movie have become a part of our lives I guess.

3. "Viraha Nooru Nooru Tharaha" from the movie 'Edakallu Guddada Mele'.

Classical Raga Based Kannada Film Songs

Hello,
          I am Athreya Joshi, living in Bengaluru, a mechanical engineer by profession.

What is it that makes me write a blog in the first place??!! 

          Volumes have been written by scholars in connection with the Indian classical music and its influence on every single walk of life including our films, however we see (or at least I see) that it is very less when it comes to Kannada film industry.

          In this effort I thought I could post a few classical Ragas and their related Kannada film songs, This is a novice effort and I welcome positive feedbacks if you people would like to give me.
